The University of Nguyen Tat Thanh is leading Vietnamese universities in THE Impact Rankings 2024

NTTU – Times Higher Education (THE) has announced the THE Impact Rankings 2024 – Rankings of higher education institutions for their impact on sustainable development in 2024. Nguyen Tat Thanh University has made its debut in this ranking.

According to Times Higher Education, 2,152 higher education institutions from 125 countries were ranked in 2024. In Vietnam, 13 universities were ranked, with Nguyen Tat Thanh University excellently leading among Vietnamese universities and ranking in the top 301-400 (top 20%) of universities worldwide.

Specifically, in its first ranking, Nguyen Tat Thanh University achieved a total score of 76/100 with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) receiving high evaluations. The university achieved outstanding results in the following goals:

    • SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being): Ranked 101-200 out of 1,498 institutions with a score of 76.7 (world average: 53.2). Notably, research related to health sciences and well-being scored 89.4.
    • SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions): Ranked 201-300 out of 1,086 institutions with a score of 69.0 (world average: 54.1). The research criterion scored 79.6.

Notably, Nguyen Tat Thanh University achieved the highest score in SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) with 80.6 points, far exceeding the world average of 52.5, and ranked 201-300 out of 2,031 institutions. The scores of some indicators include: Sustainable Development Report: 89.2 points; Number and quality of research: 86.4 points; Level of cooperation and support for promoting the goals: 81.1 points.

From Bangkok (Thailand), attending the Global Sustainable Development Congress and the Exclusive Live Reveal of THE Impact Rankings 2024, organized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation of Thailand in collaboration with THE, Dr. Tran Ai Cam – President of Nguyen Tat Thanh University, shared that along with the orientation towards innovative entrepreneurship, Nguyen Tat Thanh University has been focusing on implementing the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in recent years. This is a human-centered approach for the university’s activities. Dr. Cam further stated that Nguyen Tat Thanh University has adopted the sustainable development goals to guide the content of its community service activities, seeing it as both a commitment and a social responsibility. This is also the approach and specific social standards that the university’s students are nurtured and trained to adapt to the new era.

“Participating in this ranking is how Nguyen Tat Thanh University seeks to be objectively evaluated based on comprehensive and integrated criteria of THE Impact – from outputs, outcomes, to social impact. The results obtained will be analyzed by the university to further improve the quality and effectiveness of its activities,” emphasized Dr. Tran Ai Cam.

THE Impact Rankings, unlike traditional THE and QS rankings that focus primarily on output indicators, evaluate higher education institutions based on their contributions and impact on society through the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The basic criteria of this ranking include:

  1. Research: Evaluates the quantity and quality of research oriented towards and related to each SDG, based on Scopus data.
  2. Stewardship: Assesses how universities manage and utilize their resources to promote sustainable development within the university and the community.
  3. Outreach: Evaluates how universities collaborate with communities, governments, and other organizations to support and promote the SDGs.
  4. Teaching: Assesses educational activities and training within universities to prepare students with knowledge related to the SDGs.
